Where to Post a New App So People Actually See It

Posting a new app on every site you can think of rarely works. Most posts disappear in minutes. The better approach is to choose a few places where your people are, and show up well. Here is how.
Start with who it is for
Write down the one group your app helps most. Then list where they spend time online: a particular forum, a social platform, a newsletter or a directory. Those places, not the biggest ones, are where to post first. A post to two hundred relevant people beats a post to two million who do not care.
Check that each place fits
For each place on your list, look at the last twenty posts. Do people share projects like yours? Do they reply? Are there rules about self-promotion? If the answer to the first two is no, skip it. If the rules ban it, find another way to take part, such as answering questions.
Prepare what you will post
Before you post, get these ready:
A one-sentence description of what the app does and who it is for. Two or three clear screenshots, or a short video of the main task. A link that goes directly to a page where people can try it. A short, honest note about why you built it. A way to try it without a long sign-up, if you can.
Write the post for the reader
Lead with the problem, not the app. "I kept losing track of client invoices, so I built a simple tracker" gets more attention than "Introducing my new app". Keep it short, and ask a question that invites a reply, such as what would make it more useful. Avoid hype words and all caps.
Pick the timing
Posts do best when people are around. For most communities that means weekday mornings in the main time zone of your audience. Post when you can stay for the next few hours and answer every comment. Do not post and disappear.
Follow up
Reply to each comment quickly and kindly. Thank people who give feedback, and tell them when you fix something they raised. People remember that, and the thread keeps rising while it is active.
Keep a permanent presence too
Posts fade, but listings and your own page stay. Add your app to directories and boards where people browse, so new visitors can find it after the post is gone. See Places You Can Promote Your App for a full list of options.
Track where people come from
Use tagged links for each place you post. After a week or two, you will see which one brought visitors who actually tried the app. How to Track Campaign Links explains how.
Post again, with something new
Do not repost the same thing. Come back when you have news: a new feature, a user story, a number you are proud of. Each post should give people a reason to look again.
